Govt forming adaptation plan to address climate change: Minister

The government is formulating an effective national adaptation plan to address the risks of climate change on the basis of the views of each ministry, department, and the general public concerned.

The plan will be implemented with the cooperation of all related to this issue, said Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister Shahab Uddin.

He addressed the National Adaptation Plan Pre-Validation Workshop organized by the Ministry at InterContinental Hotel in the capital on 2nd April 2022.

Bangladesh will be able to minimize the risk of climate change by adopting and implementing medium- and long-term projects as planned.

He said implementation of the project for climate adaptation will be helped by the developed countries by increasing their finances, technology, and capabilities. The environment ministry will co-operate with all other ministries in this regard.

The minister said the government is working to ensure security for the people in terms of food, water, electricity, health, etc. Industrialized nations responsible for producing greenhouse gases should come forward to help the vulnerable countries.

The ministry secretary, Mostafa Kamal, presided over the workshop which was addressed, among others, by its Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar.

Deputy Environment Minister Habibun Nahar, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on environment ministry Saber Hossain Chowdhury, National Project Director of the NAP Preparation Project and Additional Secretary (Climate Change) Mizanul Hoque Chowdhury and Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Bangladesh Van Nguyen addressed the workshop as special guests.

The draft NAP were presented by Emeritus Professor and Climate Specialist Dr Ainun Nishat, team leader, NAP Preparatory Committee, and Malik Fida A Khan, executive director, CEGIS.
