* The value for each month is an average of the preceding 12 months. Thus, the graphic shows that not only does the CO2 concentration increase, but that the amount of increase is speeding up. While the increase over a 12 month period was 1 ppm in the 1970s, it is now exceeding 2.4 ppm per year on average.
