Greening of the Inner Niger Delta, Mali

From August to December each year, aquatic grasses and other vegetation turn central Mali from brown to green. During the region’s wet season, water flows down the Niger River and spills into the Inner Niger Delta – the largest inland delta in western Africa. However, in 2022, increased rainfall during July and August in the Upper Niger Basin caused delta waters to reach their highest level in more than 50 years in October as water traveled downstream.
